Planning the trip took no time at all and before long, we headed to the private airfield on the outskirts of town. We will fly straight to Tokyo from there. It should be about a twelve hour flight which I’m hoping gives us plenty of time to form a plan.

“You sure you want to do this? Go through all this trouble?” Armi asks as he follows me onto the plane.

“It was an attack against the family. It can’t go unpunished,” I respond stiffly.

“That’s not what I mean, and you know it,” he says bluntly, and all I can muster in response is a growl.

The plane ride is spent coming up with the plan for avenging Luca. We have a solid plan in just six hours, one we’ll rehash in the morning before heading out. We don’t talk after that. I open my laptop and review the docks’ plans and paperwork.

We found another separate office Luca had down in the tunnels. This one held all the information we could wish for, including the location of a safe house in Tokyo. I spend hours sifting through it all while Armi watches until I notice his eyes grow heavy. Neither of us has gotten much sleep since finding the answers we were seeking about Luca. We uncovered secret after secret, and it’s all crashing down around me.

Armi wakes when we get to Tokyo. Heading down the stairs and to the SUV waiting on the tarmac, he opens the door for me to enter. I slide in and across the bench seat, waiting for him to follow, but when I look back at him, I see him texting someone.

“Just reached out to my contact, who should be able to locate Daichi,” he explains. Before he finishes his sentence, his phone pings, and he glances down to check it. “Okay, he said to give him three hours, and he’ll have the location for us,” he says, tucking the phone away and sliding into the seat next to me.

“Did you get any sleep on the ride over?” he asks once we get settled, leaning his head against the window, clearly still tired.

“Yeah, I was able to get a few hours. Enough to keep me wired for a bit,” I say with only a partially forced smile.

We arrive at the safe house a little while later, and I wave off the driver, grab our bags, and head up the steps. We take our shoes off at the door, pleasantly surprised at the warming floors. Though we are surprised at the safe house’s layout or, more accurately, a safe apartment. Studio apartment… one bed.

“Of course. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had to cuddle,” I say, looking over my shoulder and winking at Armi.

I force another smile despite the memory that statement holds being a painful one. My mind automatically goes back to that day in the cellar. One of the trainees of our group had snuck into the kitchens and ate an apple. The only
